The bail Bob tree is nicknamed the upside down tree because it’s branches look like roots. Native to Africa (although introduced elsewhere), every part of this tree is used. Its bark, seeds, leaves, flowers, and fruit pulp are both edible and used for medicinal purposes because of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and prebiotic properties.

Baobab powder, derived from the fruit of the baobab tree, is gaining in popularity for its numerous health benefits in the human diet. A rich source of prebiotic fibre[1], it supports a diverse gut microbiome. It is also an abundant source of antioxidants and multiple nutrients and vitamins and a useful addition to functional dog food.

Rich in Nutrients
Baobab powder is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin B6, niacin, iron, magnesium, and potassium (100 g of baobab powder contains around 2200 mg compared to around 330 mg for 100 g of banana). Among other things, potassium supports cardiovascular functions in dogs.
Antioxidant Properties
Baobab is a particularly good source of vitamin C, containing significantly more than many other fruits. The powder is loaded with phenolic compounds, antioxidants that have been linked to health benefits including reduced inflammation, improved heart health and protection against certain diseases. Baobab powder contains a variety of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids and tannins, which contribute to its antioxidant properties.
Supports Immune Health
Thanks to its high vitamin C content, baobab powder can bolster the immune system. Vitamin C is vital for the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting off infections and illnesses.
Digestive Health: Baobab powder is a good source of dietary fibre, which supports healthy digestion. Fibre adds bulk to stool, promotes regular bowel movements, and helps prevent constipation. Additionally, baobab powder contains prebiotic fibre, which nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, supporting gut health.
Energy Boost
The powder provides a natural energy boost due to its combination of nutrients, including carbohydrates, B vitamins, and minerals like magnesium.
Hydration: Baobab powder has high levels of potassium, an electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance in the body. Incorporating baobab powder into drinks can aid in hydration, especially during physical activity or in hot weather.

A versatile ingredient
Overall, baobab powder is a versatile and nutrient-dense superfruit that can be easily incorporated into various recipes, including toppings, baked goods, and care fear or yoghurt.  Heat degradation: to retain the vitamin C, it is better to add the powder after removing food from the heat source if possible. However, even used in baking baobab will retain vitamin C activity which, given the very high starting point, will still be useful.

Important Considerations:

  • Always consult your veterinarian before making any significant dietary changes, particularly where there are pre-existing health conditions or dietary restrictions.
  • As some commercial foods contain potassium as an ingredient, check the label to see whether it’s in your dog’s food before giving more. Excessive intake of any foods can lead to adverse effects.
  • Ensure (where possible) that you use high-quality, organic products specifically formulated for pets (or better still, human grade ingredients) to avoid any potential adverse effects.
  • Introduce new foods gradually to avoid adverse effects such as gastrointestinal upset or diarrhoea.
  • I provide nutritional information purely as a helpful guide. Nutritional information on ingredients is obtained from the US Department of Agriculture’s FoodData Central site (https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/index.html) and any nutritional information provided in recipes is based on an online calculator: calories and other information will vary based on brands, ingredients and other factors.
  • Check nutrient levels and recommendations for your dog’s weight, age and activity. For example this nutritional guideline produced by FEDIAF.
